BETTER LATE THAN NEVER

Linden topped off his gas tank, or, more accurately, the gas tank in his car, today. For the first time in quite a period of time, the price was less than $3.70 per gallon. This resulted in a total saving of just over $5.00 when compared to what he would have paid maybe three weeks ago.

Linden believes that the entire credit for this price reduction should be given to our President, George W. Bush. If you remember, when he gave his support to the development of U.S. oil reserves, our price paid at the pump immediately started to fall. Of course, if Congress fails to act responsibly, the price will start to inch back up again.

Although certainly not rich, Linden can afford an occasional unwarranted $5.00 hit. His feelings are for the hardship the previous prices have brought to those not as fortunate as he is. This includes many, many of the struggling single parents and more than a few who are married. I hope they include their thanks to our President in their prayers today.

If those who favor high gas prices (congressional democrats) would have followed the lead of our President, then maybe Linden could have saved around $20.00 today and that is a very significant amount to him.

All congressional races should be in play this year and they will be if the Republicans properly frame their case.

REPUBLICANS? FOR OBAMA

Linden had heard mention of such a group and then, in the July 25 issue of the Indianapolis Star there appeared an article, written by Emily Belz, that confirmed the existence of just such a small group in Hamilton County, Indiana.

Hamilton County has been known as one of the more staunchly Republican Counties in our State – perhaps even slightly more so than Linden’s own Hendricks County.

First, you should know that Linden does not understand all forms of mental illness! How could one rationally explain or justify the selection of one with such a frightfully unimpressive resume for the highest office in our land?

If one could get over this hurdle, how would one address Obama’s 20-year membership and approval of a decidedly racist church congregation? Or, friendship with a person who attempted to blow up the Pentagon? Or, a background of work for what Linden would classify as a distasteful group? Or, close association and financial dealings with Rezko in Chicago?

Perhaps it is easier to understand why Obama’s wife has so little pride in America: She has been forced to associate with sleaze.

BIG GUN REPUBLICANS

Linden really admired Newt Gingrich in 1994. In fact, in this innocent stage of his youth (only 64 then,) Linden actually thought that there was hope for the taxpayer. And there was, for a time.

A few days ago, Linden received a political type call and the caller said Newt wanted to bounce three ideas off of me and started the recording. The first idea was so irritating that the last two went unheard. Apparently Newt wants to release some of the oil from the strategic reserve! This is Nancy Pelosi type foolishness: One longs for 1994.

The other item that caused Linden to generate this posting was receipt of a message from a “big gun” group that invited him to sign a petition to encourage Nancy Pelosi to have a vote on oil drilling legislation. The message said that the petition had already been signed by over 90,000 interested parties. We, the taxpayers, should not have to encourage Congress to do the right thing before going on another of their frequent vacations!

Besides, Linden believes that his own recommended approach is vastly superior when it comes to encouraging action. It is:

(1.)The need to find a candidate for each one of the Congressional Districts where there is currently no Republican candidate.(2.) The desirability of posting a volunteer at each gas station in our country. This person would hold a large sign naming the Congressional democrats as the ones responsible for high gas prices. These two efforts could provide a Republican majority in November.

WHY ME LORD?

When Kris Kristofferson wrote and recorded this great song in 1971, he was putting words and melody to the thought Linden has had many times. Last Thursday, these thoughts came more than once. Following the usual breakfast meeting, with Chuck, Jack, Paul and myself present, I went to the post office and received two packages. They were from Katia.

I very much enjoy corresponding with my good friend, Katia. I say we are good friends even though we have never met. We share an interest in a person I met in Austria last year. Katia knew her in Bulgaria. One of the packages from Katia contained two delicious Danish Kringles www.ohdanishbakery.com and the other had in it some of the best cookies (same bakery) that I’ve ever tasted. It also had two jars of Bulgarian honey in it. You would have to know how much I love sweets to know what a meaningful gift I received. Thank you Katia for blessing me. Why Me?

I first met Thuc, originally from Viet Nam, in 1989 when he joined our Indiana Dept. of Correction data processing group. He is now transferring to another State agency. Thursday night he had an appreciation dinner for some of those he was most closely associated with.

Present were Bob, our former Division Director, and his wife, Pati; Greg, who worked closely in system development with Thuc, and his wife, Wendy; Thuc's daughter, Jennifer, who will be a doctor; his Aunt, Li, and myself. Unfortunately, our former Division Secretary, Brenda, was unable to attend.

We had dinner at a very nice Greek restaurant and went to Thuc’s home for dessert and a good visit afterward. Thank you Thuc and friends for blessing me. Why Me?

Friday was highlighted by our early morning Men’s Prayer Breakfast and, later, Paul helping me clean leaves out of the house gutters. Saturday was just the normal household and paperwork tasks. Sunday was Church, Sunday school, brunch with friends, paper reading and evening services in the shady grove on the Church North property. Blest am I: Why Me, Lord? What have I ever done to deserve…

I AM A JELLY DONUT

Apparently there was a two band rock concert in Berlin Wednesday night. It drew a huge crowd, including U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama. It seems the main stream media were/are unaware that their focus was entirely on Obama being there. In this regard, the reporting is much as it was regarding the concert/speech in Portland, Oregon Is it any wonder that newspapers are losing subscribers and advertising revenue.
Linden read a little bit of the print converage and listened to some comments on the Rush Limbaugh show. One such Obama comment was something like "Don't just judge me by what I say but also by what I do." Followed by "On the Senate Banking Committee, which is my committee..." Problem: Obama is not on that committee. Perhaps he has spent so little time in the Senate that he really does not know what his duties are.
A caller to the Limbaugh show said that what Obama really said when he attempted to say in German that he was a Berliner was really "I am a jelly donut." That gaffe has led Linden to decide that he will not learn Spanish (as Obama suggests) until after Obama becomes fluent in German.

THREE BIG GUNS AND LINDEN

MICHELLE MALKIN
On July 23, this big gun posted on Human Events a writing entitled "The Man Who Could Topple Jack Murtha." She was referring to the campaign of William Russell www.russellbrigade.com in the 12th District of Pennsylvania. It is always a treat to read Malkin"s pieces and this was especialy so because of the favor it would be to America to get rid of Murtha. You may remember that Linden endorsed Russell in his posting of June 27 entitled "Hope For The Future."

THOMAS SOWELL
Sowell, another favorite of Linden's, presented a two part post on July 22, also on Human Events, entitled "Bankrupt 'Exploiters'." It addresses the responsibility of Congress in relation to the mortgage loan situation. Linden alluded to the same responsibility in "Three Items" which was posted on June 11. The Sowell piece is much better written and goes into further detail.

INDIANA
The Indianapolis Star July 22 lead article by Jeff Swiatek reports that Indiana has, for the first time, been granted Standard & Poor's top credit rating. Indiana is one of only 10 States to be so rated. Way to go Governor Daniels! This will save millions of dollars.

SAN FRANCISCO
Also on July 22, while listening to the Laura Ingraham radio show Linden heard the sob laced story of a husband and two sons being murdered by an illegal alien in this "sanctuary city." It sounds like not much of a sanctuary for the legal residents.

RUSH LIMBAUGH
Same day: Rush reported that Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac (I hope Linden has properly identified these government backed lending agencies) has contributed over one million dollars to Jesse Jackson interests. Any taxpayer funded business that thinks this is a legitimate use of assets certainly does not deserve a taxpayer funded bailout.

LINDEN'S LIFE
Monday was just the normal day of attending to everyday life. Included were borrowing a stepladder for outside use soon and my mechanic telling me that the car tires are losing air. Received several interesting emails.
Tuesday, Linden was not feeling well and did not meet the guys for coffee or play golf. Had another good talk with Julie, did some writing related tasks and emailing.

CHILDREN OF ILLEGALS

BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP—the policy whereby the children of illegal aliens born within the geographical limits of the United States are entitled to American citizenship—is a great magnet for illegal immigration. Many believe that this policy is an explicit command of the Constitution, consistent with the British common law system. But this is simply not true.
Who is a Citizen?
Citizenship, of course, does not exist by nature; it is created by law, and the identification of citizens has always been considered an essential aspect of sovereignty. After all, the founders of a new nation are not born citizens of the new nation they create. Indeed, this is true of all citizens of a new nation—they are not born into it, but rather become citizens by law.
Although the Constitution of 1787 mentioned citizens, it did not define citizenship. It was in 1868 that a definition of citizenship entered the Constitution, with the ratification of the Fourteenth Amendment. Here is the familiar language: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside." Thus there are two components to American citizenship: birth or naturalization in the U.S. and being subject to the jurisdiction of the U.S. We have somehow come today to believe that anyone born within the geographical limits of the U.S. is automatically subject to its jurisdiction. But this renders the jurisdiction clause utterly superfluous and without force. If this had been the intention of the framers of the Fourteenth Amendment, presumably they would simply have said that all persons born or naturalized in the United States are thereby citizens.
The constitutional grounds for the majority opinion in Wong Kim Ark are tendentious and it could easily be overturned. This would, of course, require a proper understanding of the foundations of American citizenship, and whether the current Supreme Court is capable of such is open to conjecture. But in any case, to say that children of legal aliens are entitled to citizenship is one thing; after all, their parents are in the country with the permission of the U.S. It is entirely different with illegal aliens, who are here without permission. Thus repeal of the current policy of birthright citizenship for the children of illegal aliens would not require a constitutional amendment.

PROUD OF INDIANA REPUBLICANS

At this time, when many Republican incumbents, candidates, supporters and interested observers are doing the "the sky is falling" routine, Indianapolis Republicans have quickly and efficiently stepped forward with a candidate after the slated candidate decided to abandon his campaign.
How great it would be if there were such efficient efforts across the nation. It is not possible to predict at this time how many Congressional Districts will be ceded to the democrats in the November election - but there will be several. That is shameful! The caring people in those Districts deserve better and the democrats who will "serve" in those Districts need to know that they have some who are not sold on their ability to serve our country
It has been at least ten years since Linden has been even marginally active politically in Marion county where the Indiana Seventh District is located so, it is fair to say that he is out of touch there. He does know that he has been less than favorably impressed with the efforts made by the current democrat officeholder who has held that office only a short time.
So, congratulations to Gabrielle Campo for being the Republican candidate and congratulations to the Republican party in Marion county for efficiently doing the job that should be the primary focus of every like organization. Linden is proud of both the candidate and the party.

Friday brought the usual early morning Men's Prayer Breakfast at Church, had a very pleasant and long telephone conversation with Julie and put together a package of 15 poems for editing.
Saturday, had another early morning breakfast meeting at Kingsway church and then attended an Avon Writers Group meeting. We had some fun writing exercises.
Sunday started with church services, Sunday school and brunch with friends. In the afternoon, visited with old friends - I wanted them to see a picture of Jade. Attended very nice evening church services. They were scheduled for the shady grove on the North property but a heavy rain forced the service inside. Ice cream and talk followed the service. Carol, of the Indianapolis TCM office, said she needed a few more short term workers in Austria: I would love to go but would have to be much stronger than is the current situation. Maybe prayer will allow me to consider the trip. Hope so.

INDIANA BUDGET MANAGEMENT

Even though it has been hot enough the last couple of days to slow Linden to the point that he has not worked hard at developing a story line for today's posting, actually, Linden has trouble working hard regardless of the temperature and still believes that the world is in the first stages of a global cooling cycle. Luckily the news surfaced that the State of Indiana has just reported a solid budget surplus and that is the subject of this short posting.
Perhaps Mitch Daniels should be a Presidential candidate, we surely need a leader in Washington that has a basic understanding of the advantage to taxpayers of not spending more than you take in.
With all of our surrouding States spending beyond their means (thereby joining most of the rest of the nation,) it is a comforting feeling to know that we have a conservative leading the State of Indiana. The voters would be absolutely nuts to replace him in the election this November. On several occasions voters has displayed their ability to make such poor decisions.

On Wednesday, Linden had an enjoyable luncheon with a friend (it would probably be difficult to have an enjoyable luncheon with an enemy,) submitted entries to two contests, worked on some poetry for my next book and did little else.
Thursday, had the usual breakfast meeting with friends and the rest of the day was pretty much a replay of Wednesday.

BUSH LIED, PEOPLE DIED?

These words are oft repeated by those on the loony left who were/are more interested in undermining the President than they are in any other cause. Unfortunately, some of those of that ilk are "serving" in congress. For Linden, it sounds like something that Murtha or Reid might say. Have you noticed that the rating of the President is three times better than than of congress?

Now that reliable news reports have outlined the shipping of 550 METRIC TONS of yellowcake uranium from Iraq to Canada, perhaps we can be spared further recitation of this despicable mantra.

Maybe now would be a good time to revisit the Valerie Plame/Joe Wilson farce and repeat the erroneous statements of all involved.

Maybe now would also be a good time to ask those congressional "leaders" who specialize in worthless investigations and hearings to use some of their personal wealth to repay taxpayers for the expensive time they have caused to be wasted.

SLEEPING WITH A DEMOCRAT

Now, it is only fair to tell you that Linden is not a doctor of mind or body and perhaps is not always on the mark when he diagnoses an ailment. With that said, he should also say that, early on, he was quite happy with Arnold Schwarzenegger and, considering their past misfortunes, probably most of the citizens of California were happy too. However, just recently one short news blurb intimated that Arnie was opposed to drilling for oil: This is not acceptable.
I believe that Arnie is basically a pretty smart guy and it appears that he is into physical conditioning. So, there must be some other reason for this mental breakdown. I believe that it is caused by sleeping with one who was at least formerly a member of the Kennedy clan. One does not expect rational thought from a Kennedy and they are known to try to influence others.
I believe that it was on the Rush Limbaugh show that I heard that in response to the question, "what would you do to bring down gas prices", Diane Feinstein said: "develop alternative energy sources!" It may be that we should expect high energy costs for the rest of her life. Her husband should be careful.
I suppose one could express concern for the mental health of the mates of Harry
Reid and Nancy Pelosi but perhaps we should just pray for those they represent and affect the lives of.

Linden's Life
The most important thing was noticing that the sickly butterfly bush that I transplanted (Rubye gave me the original) now has one bloom. There is hope! I had originally transplanted two of them but one got plowed under by workmen. Played golf on Tuesday - I am not able to take that disappointment more than once a week.

It is commonly reported that about 90% of black voters cast their vote against the Republicans. In the contest between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, it was reported that black support for Clinton was in the high single digit range: Would she consider the non-supporters to be N…?
If it is true what Jesse Jackson (Rev.) is reported to have said about what he would like to do to Obama, would it be fair to call him and his supporters N…?
If it is true that a worker in Washington, D.C. was fired for referring to an amount as “niggardly”, would it be fair to refer to the complainer and his supporters as N…?
If it is true that a worker in Texas was forced to apologize for referring to lost paperwork as “falling in a black hole”, would it be fair to refer to his opponents as N…?
And, lastly, since it took Obama 20 years to realize that his pastor was a racist “man of God”, would it be fair to apply the N… word to Obama?

SECOND JULY WEEKEND

Friday we had the usual early morning Men's Prayer Breakfast at Church. The cooks didn't fix Linden's favorite (biscuits and gravy) but what they did prepare was pretty good. During the day, Linden did a little (very little) work in the yard and in the evening he spoke at a writers group meeting in Mooresville. That was an enjoyable experience.
It rained like crazy a couple of times on Saturday so all thought of doing any outside work was out of the question. Linden's Vietnamese friend called early in the morning to say that he is going to work for a different governmental agency. They made a good hire. He and Linden worked in the same general area at the last job Linden had.
Sunday brought Church and Sunday school. Linden wasn't feeling well so he didn't join the brunch bunch. At home, he nodded off while reading the paper and felt better when he awakened. He had told Kent while he was at Church that the goldfish pond pump wasn't working: He had tried to start it to no avail yesterday. Kent immediately depressed the reset button and it started: Linden felt dumb - he is so inept. He had pushed what he thought was the reset switch yesterday but his tired old eyes did him in once again. We had a great church service in a shady grove of trees on our North property in the evening. The service was followed with watermelon. A good day after the nap.

GOLDEN GLOWS

Usually once each month, the group of oldsters "Golden Glows" associated with the Plainfield, IN Christian Church meet for a pitch-in luncheon and normally have a guest speaker. Peggy Hileman is the driving force behind these meetings and the other events the Golden Glows engage in. Most meetings open with prayer and perhaps other statements from one of the church ministerial staff.
Todd Dillon opened our July 10 meeting with a talk on his "survival kit." It was a small plastic bag, such one may have to put items in for airline travel, filled with the following items:
TOOTHPICK- To help in picking out the good things.
BAND AID- To promote healing.
ERASER- To remove those things that are best forgotten.
RUBBER BAND- To remind of flexibility.
TEA BAG- Slow down and relax.
CHEWING GUM- Stick to it, don't give up.
TAPE- Stick together with others.
TAPE MEASURE- Measure my words.
COFFEE FILTER- Filter out negative talk.
A MINT- You are worth a mint in God's eyes.
CANDY KISS- Express love.
PENCIL- Write down and count your blessings.

This kicked off a good meetings and Linden should add that Plainfield must have the best cooks in the world.

LINDEN'S LIFE
On Wednesday, Linden performed the usual running around and other household related tasks, had the ink in his printer cartridge refilled, and worst of all, noticed a water drip coming through the living room ceiling: Bad hot water heater. Kent recommended a plumber, Linden called and they both came over in the evening. Linden had no hot water for a while.
On Thursday, there was the above referenced Golden Glows affair, the plumbers replaced the water heater while Linden was enjoying his luncheon, Cheryl, who now lives about 70 miles away, came by for a visit after the meeting. Lisa (Rubye's daughter) called from Florida while she was driving to meet a niece for dinner. She was there for a work related convention. Nice long visit with her. Brian also called and I received several emails from Julie. A good day and it is nice to have hot water again.

UNFORESEEN RICHES

Less than two weeks ago, Linden, in a depressed state, was studying his household budget. With some degree of certainty, it may be said that should never happen again.
Since then, he has received two emails from Africa, the first from The Ivory Coast and the second from Ghana. The first virtually promised to enrich Linden to the tune of five million dollars and the second upped the ante to eight million! Linden has not yet responded: Playing hard to get!
The emails came to the address that is mentioned in his blog postings. An individual usually finds it difficult to know if their writings are acceptable or not in the eyes of others. Linden believes that the generosity of these two wonderful benefactors leaves no doubt whatsoever that their hearts were touched by his writings. When time is available, he will review his postings in an attempt to ascertain exactly which posting resulted in this pot-of-gold falling into his lap.
Linden is just now starting to develop a list of important considerations in regard to handling this welcome turn of events: If you think of something that he has not listed, please advise. His current list is as follows:
(1.) Linden attempts to direct more than 10% of his income to the church and charity and goodwill enterprises. In the past, there has been no great difference between gross and net income so it made little difference which was used as the basis for giving considerations. Now, with 13 million bucks coming, of which 4 or 5 million will go immediately to taxes, it makes a great deal of difference. What to do!
(2.) A problem also arises in the area of how to direct a small portion of this windfall to his children, to relieve some of the day to day operation pressure, without causing them to feel that they could now quit striving on their own.
(3.) Directing a small portion of the fund to opposing the political forces of evil and to support of conservative values.
This is the current list: Linden’s mind is whirling!

EARLY MORNING LEARNING

On July 1, Linden's posting entitled "UNWEDS" was the first in what he envisaged as a short series on the damage to virtually all of society when children are produced in this less than ideal environment. Those most hurt are usually the children followed closely by the parent (often a child herself.) The biological father usually "gets off" scot free and may actually brag about his "accomplishment."
So, Linden was pleased that Curt Smith, President, Indiana Family Institute, was the speaker at the Tuesday morning Republican Roundtable breakfast meeting in Hendricks county. The food and fellowship were good but Curt's presentation was the highlight of the morning.
Curt presented several items of interest that dealt directly with the subject matter and and other items of a peripheral political interest which were associated with the subject at hand. Good meeting.

Both Monday and Tuesday were largely non-interesting, non-productive days for Linden. Although not sick, his energy level was too low for him to do even some of the minor and relatively easy things that need doing. Did manage to address some writing challenges. Maybe Wednesday will be a turn-around day.

DIDN'T NANCY PROMISE?

Is Linden confused or didn’t Nancy Pelosi promise to do away with earmarks? Wasn’t that part of her early on talk about how this session of Congress would be such an improvement over the previous session? What a laugh!
Citizens Against Government Waste recently sent Linden their Waste Watch newspaper which touched upon the subject of pork barrel projects: It reported that in 2008, there were 11,610 such projects at a cost of over 17 billion taxpayer dollars. Thank you Nancy!
It reported that Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) was quoted in the January 4 (Linden’s birthday) Washington Times as follows: “Instead of conducting our business in Congress with an eye toward what is best for the whole country, we fight about what is best for our next election and who can get the most taxpayer dollars for his state or congressional district. This is not how our Founders intended Congress to function… but the system of earmarking has taken our energy and diverted it away from solving national problems and wasted it on the task of steering tax dollars back home. Earmarking results in a terrible waste of taxpayer money, but the greatest cost is the wasted opportunity to address serious national challenges.”
Who could argue with that thought?

JULY FOURTH WEEKEND

Had it not been for the great Americans our country was blessed with over two hundred years ago, there would have been no reason or thought to celebrating with fireworks this past weekend. Had not George Washington been the type of leader he was, it is difficult to imagine how our country would have progressed. Had George Bush not been the type leader he is, who knows if we would have had this recent celebration with the collective feeling of national security we have. We are blest.
On the evening of the Fourth, Linden was invited to view the fireworks at Carl and Shirley's. Their home is on the South end of the small lake across from where the Plainfield fireworks show occurs. It was a fabulous show and was made even better by the playing of patriotic tunes by the orchestra that was there.
On Saturday, Carl drove the three of us plus Bob and Gayle, who were up from Tennessee, to a birthday celebration for Jack and Jim. It is probably 60 miles to the site of the party and there were probably at least 60 in attendance. Very nice surprise party for the two honorees. Jack and I have been friends for over 50 years and his friendship with Jim is even longer. Great Saturday!
Linden's Sunday was the normal church and Sunday school services followed by brunch with friends. In the evening there was a nice service outside on our North property. This was followed by hot dogs, chips and drinks. Pretty enjoyable.
Bill and Barbara Furman had met Bill and Mary Buher of Bloomington, IN while they were at Haus Edelweiss in Austria. They had discussed my interest in a student there that they all had met. So, the five of us went out for ice cream and had a great visit. An email was sent to our friend in Austria after Linden returned home. Great and busy weekend!

PEAK OIL + ANWR

Peak oil is considered to be the point in time when oil production within an area reaches its peak and will decline from that point forward. For the U.S., that time was about 1970 and for the world, it is estimated to be around 2020. Due to recent major oil field discoveries, it is quite possible that with efficient management, both of these dates could be extended for many years.
Our congressional “leaders” have known of this situation for almost 40 years and have done little other than talk about pie-in-the-sky alternative energy. All talk, no deeds!

Ms. Kane addresses the four disgraceful Senate roll call votes on the initiatives presented by President Bush. Before reading this, Linden did not believe that he could think less of the Senate as a body: He was wrong.
While studying these roll call votes in their entirety, the thought occurred to Linden that there was little thought continuity within this august group. It could even appear that agreement was reached before the votes in order to ensure passage of the wrong approach while providing maximum political cover for the voting members. If the rules required that all amendments be germane to the primary bill purpose, it would be much harder to play these political games. Of course, that would require positive action. Impossible!
If Linden read and interpreted the article correctly, only Senators Allen (R-VA) and Frist (R-TN) were both consistent and straight thinking. Does this mean that we should evaluate the desirability of retaining the other 98?

Wednesday brought several phone calls including Brian giving me an update on the short vacation trip he and Sheri took: They had a good time. Had some pictures that were taken at the Mission House developed. Went to the Chamber of Commerce and bought a plastic duck for the Fourth of July duck race down White Lick creek. Did a little (not much) work around the goldfish pond. Emails from Julie.
Thursday we had our usual breakfast meeting - I would bet that there are few groups of old men who enjoy their meetings more than we do ours. Luckily was home when one of the youth ministers came by to say that he had locked himself out of his office area and had left his key inside. Other than that, did a bit of writing.

ANWR

From time to time Linden has posted an opinion piece on the related subjects of global cooling, drilling for oil in The Artic National Wildlife Refuge, an incompetent congress, etc, etc.
A few days ago, Linden received a forwarded email from Bill Furman: It had originated, Linden believes, with Mutt Robinson. Mutt and his wife, Joyce, had flown into Prudhoe Bay about four years ago. The pictures that accompanied the email were not likely to cause the words ”pristine wilderness area” to come to mind. It certainly appears that the pictures which refer to it as such have to be labeled “false advertising.” They have to be planted by those opposed to drilling.
In the summer, it looks like an isolated swampy area and in the winter it looks too cold and isolated for even Santa Claus.
The email is much more descriptive than Linden will ever be: If you would like Linden to forward it to you, just ask and ye shall receive.
Tomorrow’s posting is expected to address this same general subject.

ELECTION 2008

From this blog’s inception date in October of 2007 until the present time, Linden has made no secret of the fact that John McCain was not among his first choices for President in this election. However, in making a comparison between the headache (not conservative enough) of John McCain to the leg amputation (increased taxes+++) of Barack Obama, there should be no doubt as to who would be the best leader for our country.
Linden was fortunate enough to hear a major portion of the speech McCain made July 1 to The National Sheriff’s Association. In it, he said “But nowhere is the influence of a President more critical to law enforcement than in the power of judicial nominations.”
It is not just the Supreme Court; it is the ability to set the tenor of the entire judicial system! McCain went on to decry the overturning (by our five most liberal Supreme Court members) of the Louisiana law which allowed the death penalty for one guilty of violent child rape. Did not Obama vote against the two most recent conservative nominees?
In other areas, he expressed his opposition to legislative earmarks and appeared to have some (but not enough) worthwhile thought in regard to immigration. In other writings, McCain has stated that Obama will surrender in Iraq, will increase the size of the federal government and will raise your (my) taxes.
Perhaps if we could turn out some of the more disgraceful members of Congress, we may even be able to effect a change in McCain’s opposition to oil production. So, in the end, the question is: “Would you rather have a headache or have a leg amputated?”

LINDEN'S LIFE
Monday was, as is not unusual, not a tremendously productive day: Went to the post office, the grocery and visited a bit with those who remained in the Mission House. They left shortly after. Most of my concentration today was on working on getting some writings ready for publication. This will be an ongoing effort. No TV today.
Tuesday, Linden met some guys for coffee before playing nine holes of golf with Dewey, John and Paul. Did not play quite as well as last week but acceptable, by my standards. Received several calls about possible activities this coming weekend - am getting some opposition to my decision to not join in. We'll see.

UNWEDS

Linden finally decided to address this subject because of the attention a group of pregnant teens brought to Gloucester, Mass. But, it has been on the back of his mind since reading an Indianapolis Star article by Tim Evans this past January. The article was entitled “About 80% of black babies are born to unwed mothers.”
Linden has never read an in depth report on this societal problem that does not hold up as the ideal family the one that is headed by a married mother and father. Surely there are exceptions but statistics look at percentages.
Linden would define the two major contributors to this ongoing disaster as being (1.) The glamorization by TV, movies and the print media of some of the single but pregnant celebrities who are admired by those who are impressionable and (2.) Lyndon Johnson’s “War on Poverty.” This “war” reduced many black men to the position of being unwelcome in the family setting: After all, the government paid the mother to get rid of the father. Why such a large percentage of blacks support the democrats is a mystery to Linden. But, that is a subject for another time.
Since many of these teens have not had a loving father-daughter relationship, they have no idea how to handle the pressure of a boy or young man who is primarily interested in sex. Other contributing factors include a need to feel loved, low self esteem, no stable household, family poverty and countless other reasons.
Congress should address the deficiencies of the welfare system (good luck on that,) attention should be given to those who are fathering these children and, because of the normal disadvantages the newborns are inclined to suffer, it (unwed parenting) should be considered a form of child abuse.
