A radio “news” blurb reported that consumer confidence is now at an eight month high: NOBODY ASKED ME! Linden believes that, thanks to the President you elected, our country is headed for a train wreck of unprecedented proportions and nothing in sight can cause this disaster to be averted. Consider the following in relation to the conditions just prior to the Obama selection:

SAVINGS/INVESTMENTS have lost much value.
HOME VALUE same as above.
UNEMPLOYMENT more than doubled.
TAX CHEATS at home in this administration.
SHOVEL READY PROJECTS no stimulus money.
CHRYSLERS DEALERSHIP CLOSURE politically motivated.
FORCLOSURES RISING fault of the democrats.
SONIA SOTOMAYOR not qualified.
STIMULUS MONEY vanished.
NATIONAL DEBT zooming upward.
CHINA concerned about dollar value.
CUBA knows our leader is weak.
IRAN knows our leader is weak.
NORTH KOREA knows our leader is weak.
VENEZUELA knows our leader is weak.

LINDEN'S LIFE:
Chuck was absent from our Thursday breakfast meeting but Barbara, Bill’s wife, took his place. As always, a pleasant affair. I did a bunch of running around the area but averted all work.

MONEY MANAGER SUPREME:
The news and talk radio have remained full of the details of Sonya Sotomayor being nominated for a seat on the Supreme Court. Linden believes that she will be confirmed and is equally sure that she should not be. Her Mother has received a great deal of well deserved praise but Linden has seen not a word about her skill as a money manager. Perhaps it should be addressed.

Linden well remembers the time, not too many years after Sonya attended Princeton (expensive) University and Yale (expensive) Law School, when his two children were attending Indiana (much less expensive) University. Linden suffered through a long period of extreme financial difficulty and it was years before the loans were paid off.

The Mother of Sonya Sotomayor deserves praise for getting through what had to be a difficult time.

Had biscuits and gravy at Chick-fil-A and went to the post office. Worked outside for a while. Had dinner and attended what I believe is the final program of the season at my church. Did not feel too well in the evening.

ANOTHER BRICK OUT OF THE FOUNDATION:
The news media and talk radio devoted much of their attention on Tuesday to the nomination by President Obama of Sonya Sotomayor for a seat on the Supreme Court of our United States.

The very foundation of our country is our Constitution. The court systems are charged with the responsibility of applying this guiding document to the cases which appear before them. Any other consideration is an injustice and an insult to every patriotic American.

Much has been made of the Hispanic background of Sotomayor. Please explain for the benefit of this tired old man just exactly what her attributes of this type have to do with her ability to apply the confines of the Constitution to any case.

It has been said (more than once) that all of those involved in the confirmation process will be afraid to vote against her because each party wants to ensure support from the Hispanics. What person, regardless of race or background, would amount to so little that they would vote for anything other than their perception of what is good for our country?

If the Sotomayor judicial decisions have actually been overturned as often as has been said, then any person who votes for her confirmation is doing our country a disservice.

OBAMA VS CHENEY

OBAMA VS CHENEY:
Maybe it is the holiday or maybe it is old age but Linden seems to have lost some sense of direction in this posting. The subject, of course refers to what was billed as the debate of May 21 even though Obama scheduled his reading after Cheney was previously scheduled to speak. Hardly a debate.

If memory serves, Obama led off with thanks to an assortment of tax cheats and a gaggle of sympathetic “newsies” along with others. He talks of challenges and says that progress is being made. Says that is number one priority is keeping America safe followed by building new partnerships and stopping “torture.” Said that he is justified in closing Guantanamo.

Cheney cited two areas within which Obama made wise decisions and reviewed 9-11 related actions and pointed out that they were successful. This posting does not do his speech justice.

LINDEN'S LIFE:
What a great Memorial Day! Larry Joe was up from Louisiana to attend the race and we met for a long and very enjoyable breakfast.

My Niece, Jeani called from Illinois, first time we had talked in a long time. She has just remarried and called to tell me that she had moved her Dad, Raymond, into the Masonic home. He is now 97. I lived with him and my sister when I was in the eighth grade. Jeani said she and her husband should be here to see me August 19-21.

Brian and his family had also been over for the race and they stopped by to see me for a while. We had a nice but too short visit.

Julie and Jade came by maybe three hours after Brian headed back to Ohio. Another very welcome and enjoyable visit. Jade is almost thirteen months old now.

I had several very nice verbal and written compliments during the course of the day-this is perhaps my favorite: “Happy Memorial Day Linden! Thank you for all you have done and continue to do for this Great Country! It is what it is because of God's mercy and people like you, not those in Washington right now!”

MEMORIAL DAY

MEMORIAL DAY:
As is true of most holidays, it is not unusual for many of us to completely forget the meaning of the holiday. Take just a moment and reflect on the roughly two and three quarter million casualties that have resulted from the wars we have been engaged in. Of these, about six hundred and twenty five thousand were killed in action. Of course, we no longer get a daily dose of the news related to the death total in our current wars. Does bias exist in reporting?

As you reflect, attempt to visualize the changed lives resulting from these casualties and deaths. Consider the tears shed and the lives which have experienced a change of direction. Up until this point in the history of our nation, we have each been blessed by those who have sacrificed so greatly for us. May God bless them. May their sacrifice not have been in vain.

Following is one of the sonnets which appears in my most recently published book:

MEMORIAL DAY (2008)

Many were called and most of us went
Having no choice as to where we were sent
Marching and training all the long day
Doing it all for minimal pay
Graduation came with it's required parade
Assignments were coming and most were afraid
Will I be sent to the front lines to serve
When it comes to killing will I lack the nerve

Those who returned were torn and tattered
Wondering how much their sacrifice mattered
The appeasers in the party politic
We must admit just make us sick

EFFECT OF THE TEA PARTIES:
The widespread expression of dissatisfaction with the direction our leaders are taking our country was nicely expressed with numerous “Tea Parties” in a large number of locations. The potential effect on the next election has made some in Washington very nervous.

By a vote of 90 to 6, the Senate rejected the Obama plan to bring the Guantanamo terrorists into the U.S.. The six, all democrats, siding with Obama were Dick Durbin of Illinois, Tom Harkin of Iowa, Patrick Leahy of Vermont, Carl Levin of Michigan and Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, both of Rhode Island. Supporting their future opponents is recommended.

President Obama, I suppose read a speech attempting to outline his superior grasp on achieving whatever it is that he wishes for our country. Former Vice President Cheney speech, I suppose, outlined some of the shortcomings of the President’s thinking.

On one short radio blurb, there was mention of the possibility that VP Biden could be removed from office because of his inability to synchronize his mouth with lucid thought.

Following our Thursday morning breakfast meeting, Chuck and I helped Bill get his car to a repair shop. It had failed the previous night after the program at church.
I had a few messages from Sharon. I had not heard from her for a longer period than usual and was beginning to worry. She is ok, just busy. A link to her blog (sherbitter) is now included in LINKS.
Chris Irwin, the missionary we help to fund in Spain will be staying in the Mission House the next couple of nights.

Linden does not remember being overly impressed with any of the candidates who were interested in being Chairman of the RNC and this would include Michael Steele who was ultimately selected.
Linden wanted someone who was hard charging and not afraid to say things that might not find favor with the main stream media. He thought there were no candidates who met his criteria.

Linden heard a few words on the Laura Ingraham radio show that he was really impressed with, found the speech recorded in an article carried by Investors Business Daily and here is part of it:

“We've seen strategists writing memos and doing briefings urging that Republicans avoid confronting the President. Steer clear of any frontal assaults on his Administration, they warn.

MAY FOR PRESIDENT:
Dr. Donald May of Lubbock, Texas is a distinguished black man with a list of credentials that would be the envy of almost any other person. What Linden is bringing you today is a slightly edited version of the speech he is credited with giving in Lubbock at Tea Party time. Linden does not know who originated the print version he used but will call attention to the speech being made without a teleprompter.

"Ladies and gentlemen, This is a Time For Courage. We are gathered here today on the Plains of West Texas in common purpose. We are here to remind our government that this is our country, We the People are still in charge, and our government is still our servant and not our master. Our Nation's founding document is The Declaration of Independence. It tells us that our rights come from God and not from a small group of Elite men and women. Our Constitution starts with the words "We the People." Our Constitution was written for ordinary Americans like you and me. Our Constitution protects us from our government and from the politicians.
Our President has complained that our Constitution gives ordinary people too much protection. He has ridiculed us for the high value we place on our Bibles, our guns, our personal property, and our Liberty. He tells us we do not deserve to keep the money we have earned. We are toldfreedom has not worked. Personal responsibility, free enterprise, and Liberty have not been effective. Our government will now make more of our decisions for us.
Other than our military, I can think of not one government agency I have ever found to be helpful. And speaking of our military, how about those Navy Seals blowing the heads off those three terrorist pirates? Don't you just wish our entire government would function with such efficiency,professionalism, and courage? We watch in disbelief as our beloved United States is weakened economically, militarily, and morally by a Radical President and his eager accomplices. What has taken generations to build is systematically destroyed and replaced with the same Socialist Evil that brought poverty, destruction, and despair to untold hundreds of millions.
The problems we face today have occurred because we have not defended our Nation from Socialism. For too long we have allowed the wrong people to make the worst possible decisions. The Bible warns us of class hatred. The Radical leadership of our government daily fans the evil flames of class envy.
Our European and Canadian friends beg us to not make the same Socialist mistakes they did. The President of the European Union warned our President that his Socialist economic plans are taking the World down the "road to Hell." The path to power for Socialists includes taking God and guns from the citizens. Without spiritual and physical protection, people cannot defend themselves and their Liberty. They soon become slaves.
We are angered that our President apologizes for the exceptionalism and heroism of the United States of America. We are deeply troubled he told others the United States is not a Christian nation. We are angered that we have been called cowards and racists because we oppose Socialism. Socialism is not racial. Socialism is an equal opportunity destroyer. We are angered that a recent Department of Homeland Security report has singled out our military men and women who are returning home as being radical threats. The report also characterizes you and me as right-wing extremists and radicals because we favor smaller government and lower taxes. You and I are average citizens who believe just like most of our fellow Americans. We want our government to leave us alone and to keep its hands off our money, our religion, or guns, our private property, and our lives. We demand that our government stop spending money it does not have. Stop confiscating our money and private property. Stop printing money. Stop subsidizing Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the other failed financial institutions and companies.
Mr. President, stop appointing tax cheats to positions of power and influence. Mr. President, secure our borders. Mr. President, do not divert money from our missile defense, F-22 Raptors, and other vital military equipment. This gives encouragement, aid, and comfort to our enemies.Protecting us is your number one job. Mr. President, do not give voting rights to millions of illegal aliens and felons. You have no more right to create new voters for your benefit than you do to use our money to buy the 2010 and 2012 Elections. We gather peacefully here today because there is a growing concern for what our government is doing to us and to our future. We fear for the very survival of our Republic.
Yet there is much to make us hopeful and to fill our hearts with optimism and courage. This is still our country! The Constitution of the Unites States belongs to We the People. Our Constitution still protects us from our government. Call every possible elected official, including our President, Vice President, and the Speaker of the House. Demand that they stop stealing our money and giving itto ACORN and their other political supporters in order to buy votes.Call Senators Cornyn and Hutchison, and Representative Neugebauer. Thank them. Urge them to do much more. Remind them now is a time for action and not for campaigning. Volunteer to work on our 2010 Census. Confront ACORN. Keep our Census honest. We must not allow our President to take control of our Census for his political advantage. We must replace as much of our Far Left Congress as possible in 2010. Get involved. Do not let the ACORN control our 2010Election. Talk with someone every day who does not understand our nation's history and our great heritage. Tell them why the United States is a good and prosperous nation. It still remains that brightly lit city on the hill. It still is the best hope for all mankind. Talk with all of the young people you can find. They are our future. Many do not understand what they have and that their future is being destroyed. Encourage your elected State officials to pass legislation that will protect us from our Federal government. Governor Rick Perry and others are doing that right now for Texas. Thank them and pray for them. This is a time for strong peaceful action. Let us pray that We the People can quickly return our government to its Constitutional responsibilities.
Our President and Congress were elected to be our servants and not our masters. May God help our President and Congress to quickly realize the error of their ways and stop their reckless andunwarranted spending, cut our taxes, and reduce the size of our Federal bureaucracy. If they do not, may God grant us the courage and determination to vote them out of power next year. May God richly bless and protect each of you, and our Constitution, as together we pursue Liberty!"

BEING NONJUDGMENTAL

BEING NONJUDGMENTAL:
This seems to be an impossible task for Linden! When he viewed the front page picture of the president of Notre Dame and President Obama in the May 18 edition of The Indianapolis Star, he felt almost physically ill. Of the two, the head of the university was, in Linden’s view, the least impressive. Insincerity personified.

Linden would describe himself as being a Conservative Protestant. Therefore, perhaps he should make no judgment of those who do profess a slightly different belief. However, it can not fail to appear that many who profess this belief are willing to depart radically from the stated belief of those they profess to consider most holy.

If Obama did say that “both sides can find common ground,” it would appear that the common ground would be in some area other than support or lack of support for killing babies. Murder by any other name is still murder. Judgment is promised. Even to those who are called “President.”

Linden does not fault Obama for accepting this invitation nor, to a lesser degree, does he fault Notre dame for issuing the invitation: it is customary. He does fault Notre Dame for giving Obama an honorary degree.

A quiet day with only a trip to the post office and grocery. In the evening, he went with five other guys to Camp Allendale for a Christian Men’s meeting. Had a good dinner and there was a good program. Last year, 2210 kids attended camp there and 128 of them ended up being baptized. This year, 2270 have signed up to attend already.

INCOMPETENCE TAX:
At the close of last year and the first days of this year, the price of gasoline gradually decreased. This price decrease was due to the perceived possibility of the U.S. becoming self sufficient through use of the drill here, drill now approach.
As the incompetence of this administration became apparent and when it also became apparent that drill here, drill now was dead for the present, gasoline prices started to rise.
Within the last two months, Linden purchased gasoline for almost a full dollar a gallon less than he will pay for it today. For the average driver, this means that roughly ten dollars a week more will be spent for gasoline than was true this short time ago. It is doubtful that you need to be told how much ten dollars a week means to the average U.S. driver and/or family. If it is a two car family, think twenty dollars a week!
It would not be wrong to think of your individual expense to be considered a tax on you necessitated by the incompetence of a number of those elected to high office in 2008. Did you do this to yourself?

LINDEN'S LIFE:
Busy day! First, Linden joined the usual Thursday morning group for a pleasant meal. Then, at 11:30 he attended the very nice “Golden Glows” luncheon. Mrs. Leslie Shaffer presented the program in the form of about twenty songs played on the marimba. She was greatly appreciated.
In the evening, Cheryl came by for the first time in a long time: she brought me some maple syrup: I love it! John then dropped by to say that he had the problem with the sewer lift station pump resolved. This was a good day.

On this lazy, rainy day (Wednesday) while driving his recliner and listening to Rush Limbaugh, Linden heard mention of the subject as it was tied to the planned cap and trade legislation and the massive tax increase it will bring about if enacted. This increase will affect every U.S. citizen-rich and poor. Did you vote for this?

Following breakfast, State Senator Phil Boots spoke to those of us who had gathered together for this meeting. A rather contentious legislative session had just ended without all of the work being completed. Governor Daniels will be calling the legislators back into session to address the unresolved matters.

Senator Boots spoke primarily on education (which always seems to have funding problems) and about unemployment insurance, which is and has been saddled with insufficient funding problems. This same situation exists in several states.

The recommended new approach to unemployment insurance will include, among other items, a hold harmless benefit for those businesses that never tap the fund, require the unemployed to actively seek employment, and allow employers greater latitude in the dismissing of employees.

Hendricks County is blessed with great public servants and an equally great Republican organization.

Attended the meeting mentioned above, performed some small running around tasks, Brenda called to say it enjoyable last night and she also touched upon my writings and music. Later she sent me pictures that Thuc had sent her, including a couple of Jennifer at her becoming a doctor last Saturday. Sharon and Bob called from Florida to tell me that Sharon’s eye operation was a walk in the park compared to mine of maybe eight years ago.
Cheryl sent me pictures of the small town of Linden, Indiana. I have never been there but, as you would expect, it looks like a nice town. Laura had called me as she drove through Linden about a month ago and said that she wished that she had brought her camera. Late in the day, I changed into shorts and did a little bit of outside work. First time in a long time.

DANDY DICK

What a great Vice President we had! Tuesday, Linden had just a bit of time to listen to the Rush Limbaugh radio show: the former Vice President was featured in the snippet heard.
It seems the VP had appeared on some Sunday “news” program and had been asked to compare the relative worth to the Republican party of Rush and Colin Powell. He indicated that he was not sure that Powell is still a Republican. Linden wonders if he ever was.
Also, the VP was able to comment on our current President making our country less safe than it was when George Bush was President. It would be difficult to wage an intelligent argument against the views of Dick Cheney.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH

Linden received an interesting writing from Cheryl that had to do with treating cancer with asparagus. The article was convincing enough that Linden, if he can find his blender, will give it a try as follows: Using cooked or canned asparagus, he will puree it in the blender and keep in the refrigerator. Morning and evening, he will put four tablespoons of the puree into a cup, fill with warm water and drink. Hopefully it will not be so nasty that he has to flavor it with anything else.
Linden has written enough about the present administration that you should have been able to figure out that he has no confidence in it and believes that those who caused many of the controlling party to be elected either have little analytical ability, are unable or unwilling to exercise good judgment, actively wish our country harm, or have some other thought processing type of problem.

Highlights were Men’s Prayer Breakfast on Friday; the graduation of Jennifer on Saturday, and church and Sunday school on Sunday.
It seems impossible that this little girl is now a medical doctor. But, she is. Her father, Thuc, originally from Viet Nam, and I have been friends for close to twenty years. About 275 new doctors were introduced at the graduation. About a dozen of us went to a Greek restaurant after the ceremony. It was a very good day.
