CONDENSED BIBLE STUDY--GENESIS

Genesis and the next four Bible books are attributed to the prophet Moses. He was well educated and it is believed that his writings came directly from GOD and the words of those who came before Moses.

We can not imagine time before the world we know began but in the beginning as we know it, GOD created the heaven and the earth and all that is in and around it. His creation, including that of man (Adam) was accomplished in six days (of unknown length) and then HE rested on the seventh day.

Following this first week, GOD created woman (Eve) and called for marriage. He placed Adam and Eve in a wonderful garden (Eden) and commanded them not to eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge. They were induced to disobey and were banished from Eden.

Cain and Abel were born – Cain murdered Abel and he was banished. Generations followed him.

Adam and Eve then had Seth and other sons and daughters and long living generations followed. Hundreds of years later, Noah came. Because of the sin in the world, GOD had Noah build an ark to house his three sons and their families and some of all species and then everything except the ark was buried under the great flood.

Generations followed and the earth became populated. A descendent of Shem, one of Noah’s sons, was Abram (later named Abraham) was favored by GOD. His nephew, Lot, escaped from the city of Sodom before it, along with Gomorrah, were destroyed by The LORD.

When Abraham was 100 years old he had his first son , Isaac, by his wife, Sarah. Later, Abraham proved his faith in The LORD by starting to sacrifice Isaac. The LORD did not allow this to happen but HE was well pleased with the faith of Abraham. Sarah dies and Isaac marries Rebekah. Abraham remarries, has children and dies at age 175. Isaac and Rebekah have twin sons, Esau and Jacob. They compete.

Jacob marries sisters Leah and Rachel. Leah has several children and Rachel has Joseph. Later, Rachel has Benjamin and dies. Jacob is renamed, Israel. Isaac dies at age 180.

Jacob favors Joseph and Benjamin: the half brothers are jealous and, later, sell Joseph into slavery and tell Jacob that he was killed by a wild animal.

Joseph is sold in Egypt and rises to a good position, then is falsely accused and is thrown in prison. God is with him, he is released and rises to a position where he is only second to Pharaoh. Later, because of a famine, Joseph’s family comes to Egypt to buy food. They did not recognize Joseph. Later, he sent for his father.

Jacob dies and Joseph and the brothers return him to Canaan to bury him in the burial cave that Abraham had purchased for that purpose years earlier.

Joseph returns to Egypt, dies at age 110 after predicting that his bones would be returned to Canaan.
