THURSDAY, A SAD DAY
Knowing, or at least being reasonably certain, that a goodly portion of the total cost of Michelle Obama’s vacation trip to Spain will be funded by the American taxpayer, Linden thought about how many taxpayers, say those each paying $5,000.00 per year in federal taxes, it would take to fund the taxpayer portion of the bills. That is a sad thought.

Not quite, but close to equally sad is the news that Kagan was confirmed to “serve” on the Supreme Court. As predicted in an earlier posting, 5 republicans joined the gaggle of democrats. It was a sad day indeed.

LINDEN'S LIFE
In 1943 Linden started his freshman year at Southport high school, it was several times larger than the Illinois school he attended the previous year. Probably before school started he got a job helping a bread truck driver when he could: usually Saturday’s after school started. One of the stops we made, probably 40 miles South of Indianapolis, was at a large tomato field which employed several hundred Jamaicans as pickers. We arrived there just as breakfast was starting and they would play the song above (I think) over and over at peak volume. They were all Spanish speakers so I didn’t understand a word they said. They surely liked that song.

In the first grading period, I was on the honor roll and was running on the cross country team. I was never again on the honor roll but did continue running cross country, and track in the Spring through my sophomore year. It was about a six mile walk if running caused me to miss the bus ride home.

Probably the primary reason my grades dropped off was that I had gotten another job, working in a dairy. Hard work! Had to get up about 4:00 a.m. and, of course had to return to work after I got home from school. I was often tired. I turned 14 in January of that year.

Now, back to Thursday: Had our usual breakfast…Bill was gone on a trip with a church group. I went to the church, post office, credit union and grocery. Also, since my VCR player had been doing poorly, went by Jack’s to see if the tapes were bad: Nope! It is the player. Called Chuck and maybe he can solve the problem.
