AND THEN A FISHING BOAT?
No politics today except for the link re Obama strong-arm tactics: a really must read link.

You long term readers may remember that early in the year Linden said that he would use a portion of his book sales income to better the life of unfortunates through IDES (International Disaster Emergency Service.) In March he funded two goats for a needy family in Haiti. Earlier in August, he funded the purchase of a water buffalo for the needy in Southeast Asia. Now, he hopes, in the remaining months of this year, to fund the purchase of a fishing boat and net for wherever IDES thinks the need is greatest.

Linden’s “PRAYERS ANSWERED AT HAUS EDELWEISS,” a new release, will be one of the eight books and one lonely CD to help in that fishing boat and net funding goal. Here is a copy of a flyer outlining the first public sales effort:

INFORMATION:
Linden Swift will introduce his eighth book, Prayers Answered At Haus Edelweiss, at a book signing at Secondhand Stories, 55 S. Raceway Road from 1:00 to 4:00 Saturday, September 5. All eight of Swift’s books plus a CD of his music will participate in a storewide sale. Store phone number: 271-2500.

Acting on an idea from his Sunday school class, he diverts a portion of sales income to support IDES. In March, he funded two goats for the needy in Haiti and in August he funded a water buffalo for a person in Southeast Asia. He hopes to further fund a fishing boat and net for someone, somewhere in the closing months of 2009.

LINDEN'S LIFE:
Friday was Men’s Prayer Breakfast at 6:00. Running around included a trip to Secondhand Stories. Talked to Brian and Julie.

The highlights of Saturday were two sessions at church helping to package foodstuffs to send to Haiti. There were about 200 people working in each of the four shifts. My first shift was very tiring: I, standing up and working quickly helped to box the foodstuffs. My second shift was much easier: worked a heat sealer while sitting down. At the end of the day, a semi trailer was practically full. What at blessing this will be for the recipients!

Sunday started with church and Sunday school services and not much else of note.

Linden liked the email received so much that he decided to share it with you and to have no other parts to this posting other than Bible Study.

Once upon a time the government had a vast scrap yard in the middle of a desert. Congress said, "Someone may steal from it at night." So they created a night watchman position and hired a person for the job. Then Congress said, "How does the watchman do his job without instruction?" So they created a planning department and hired two people, one person to write the instructions, and one person to do time studies. Then Congress said, "How will we know the night watchman is doing the tasks correctly?" So they created a Quality Control Department and hired two people. One to do the studies and one to write the reports. Then Congress said, "How are these people going to get paid?" So they created the following positions, a time keeper, and a payroll officer, then hired two people. Then Congress said, "Who will be accountable for all of these people?"So they created an administrative section and hired three people, an Administrative Officer, Assistant Administrative Officer and a Legal Secretary.

Then Congress said, "We have had this command operation for one Year And we are $18,000 over budget, we must cutback overall cost." So they laid off the night watchman.

NOW slowly let it sink in.Quietly, we go like sheep to slaughter.

Does anybody remember the reason given for the establishment of the DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY....During the Carter Administration?

Anything?
No? Didn't think so!
Bottom line. We've spent several hundred billion dollars in support of an agency... the reason for which not one person who reads this can remember!
Ready?? It was very simple ... and, at the time, everybody thought it very appropriate. The Department of Energy was instituted on 08-04-1977.
TO LESSEN OUR DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL!!
Hey, pretty efficient, huh???
AND, NOW, ITS 2009 -- 32 YEARS LATER -- AND THE BUDGET FOR THIS "NECESSARY" DEPARTMENT IS AT $24.2 BILLION A YEAR. THEY HAVE 16,000 FEDERAL EMPLOYEES AND APPROXIMATELY 100,000 CONTRACT EMPLOYEES; AND, LOOK AT THE JOB THEY HAVE DONE!

THIS IS WHERE YOU SLAP YOUR FOREHEAD AND SAY, "WHAT WAS I THINKING?"
Ah, yes -- good ole bureaucracy. And, NOW, we are going to turn the banking system, HEALTH CARE and The auto industry over to the same Government?

TED KENNEDY DIES:
The headline in The Indianapolis Star on Wednesday was, “$9,000,000,000,000.” So, it is a pretty safe bet that Kennedy died too late to make the headline. Linden, not often very sentimental regarding people he doesn’t know, paused to wonder what portion of that NINE TRILLION DOLLARS Obama deficit is directly attributable to Kennedy.

Linden’s primary focus is GOD, COUNTRY, and FAMILY and because of this, the many instances of caterwauling on the radio news were largely wasted on him. He did, at times, question the sincerity of those who were speaking.

Since COUNTRY is so important to Linden, he has to wonder if it is possible that the country would not be better off if there had been no Kennedy immigration legislation about forty-five years ago; if his focus on government provided healthcare had not been so consuming; and, if had been a little less inclined to waste taxpayer dollars.

There are others that Linden will miss to about the same degree as he will miss Kennedy.

If Linden’s memory serves him well, it was in 1978 when Senator Frank Church of Idaho started a successful movement to emasculate our systems that provided our national security. As years went on, we as a nation were left impotent to counter the advances of those that wish us harm. Much was lost and many died as result of this foolish action.

Years later, President Bush, reacting to the attack on our nation, started to revamp our seriously depleted security resources. This is a particularly difficult area to work in, to form the associations that can be counted on for worthwhile intelligence. It may well take years to build a successful intelligence resource and it can be torn down in a short time by either unintelligent or uncaring leadership. Now, our government, by focusing on possible wrongdoing by the CIA, is restarting this exceedingly foolish nightmare.

Linden played nine holes of golf extremely poorly and when he returned home he was so tired that he had to have a nap. In the evening went to a town hall meeting with Kent and Donna McPhail. It was very well attended and enjoyable. Steve Buyer made a good impression. We stopped for ice cream on the way home.

OBAMA: GAINING ON A GOAL

OBAMA: GAINING ON A GOAL:
Linden has never understood what it is that drives some people to desire something that seems to make no sense at all. Why would one want to jump out of a perfectly good airplane? Why would a middle-aged person want to look like a teenager? Why would one want to go to either of the polar regions? Makes no sense to Linden.

On more than one occasion, President Obama has at least intimated that he would like to be the modern day FDR. Linden would judge such a thought to be an indication of being simple minded or, at best, not being very good at history. But, President Obama is gaining on seeing this thought become reality.

In the first eight years of his Presidency, Roosevelt provided our country with an average unemployment rate of eighteen point six percent! His low point in this eight year span was fourteen point three percent! Perhaps this is the goal that President Obama has set for himself. It may yet be attainable—as it already is in some sections of our country. As Rush Limbaugh says, “I hope he fails.”

LINDEN'S LIFE:
Friday brought our early morning Men’s Prayer Breakfast—Mick Crull from TCM Austria and David Wright from TCM Indianapolis were there—certainly good to see them again.
I slept in a little on Saturday—had a very realistic dream about Rubye. Ray Dewitt, a co-worker from State Police days, called for a long and pleasant visit. In the evening, went to a birthday party for Janice Grooms—she and Rubye share the 23rd as birth date. Had a nice time.
Sunday attended church services and Sunday school. Shortly after returning home, my niece, Jeani, from Illinois and her husband, Ed, came to my place and we were joined shortly after by my niece, Joyce and her husband, Virgil—they live in Franklin, IN. We ate at Cracker Barrel. It was a very pleasant visit. While gone, I missed a call from my friend, Joyce but was home to catch a call from Brian. There were many people on the property: it was church picnic day. I got home too late to attend. It was a very good day.

You may remember that on August 11, Linden stated that he was not highly in favor of his tax monies being used to help finance the purchase of automobiles for others. He has not changed his position on this matter.

However, after hearing several references to auto dealers waiting in vain for the payment the government promised, Linden had to wonder if his blog posting has somehow affected the management of the program. Rest assured, Linden remains opposed to the program but a promise is a promise—even if it came from the government.

Not wishing any harm to come to individual trusting auto dealers and ultimately to those they employ, Linden does hereby grant permission for the Obama regime to make those payments they so glibly promised. This granting of permission does not in any regard mean that Linden assumes any responsibility for this lackluster program.

A SCARY HEALTHCARE THOUGHT:
All thoughts Linden has about governmental intervention in healthcare are scary so this latest one is no worse than usual. During some radio listening on Wednesday, Linden heard mention that a small committee of three democrats and three Republicans were now working on making the current bill more palatable. Linden has suggestions that he believes are vastly superior to anything they could come up with.

Although the range of Linden’s suggestions in regard to this subject are not, as yet, fully developed, here are a couple. Extend your summer vacation—think not at all about the subject of healthcare and, later, refuse to vote for any iteration on this subject. Start drafting a bill that will cause any future bill to be limited to a size of no more than 99 letter size pages. Start developing a plan to reduce the number of those employed by the federal government. Initiate a movement which will cause full disclosure of monies spent to be revealed. Enjoy your vacation.

AUTO INDUSTRY JOB LOSSES:
Linden mentioned media job losses in his posting one week ago. Today, we will look at many more such losses in the auto industry. There were thousands of individuals who were adversely affected by the losses in this industry but perhaps the most telling loss was to what has been the primary belief in our country in the capitalist system.

When “the government” can dictate ownership and funding while nullifying valid contracts and the matter is not brought before The Supreme Court, something horrific has happened to our foundational beliefs.

Of course it is sad that so much individual pain has resulted from this economic crash and the concern for their future wellbeing is justified. One should not lose sight of the fact that much of our current economic despair is directly traceable to the crash caused by those housing loans that were encouraged by the democrats. Especially Chris Dodd and Barney Frank.

One must wonder if those laid off auto workers who voted for Obama or who failed to vote at all have now traced some of their current problems to their own poor judgment.

King Xerxes wife, the queen, disobeyed him and was to be replaced. Esther, a beautiful Jew who had been raised by her Uncle Mordecai, was on of those chosen to possibly replace the former queen. Esther was chosen. Mordecai discovered a plot to kill the king, he reported it to Esther who then told the king. The two involved were hanged.

Mordecai refused to honor Haman, the king’s number one assistant and this irritated Haman. Knowing that Mordecai was a Jew, he influenced the king to order the extermination of all the Jews in the country.

WHEN A LIAR SPEAKS:
When a liar speaks, particularly if they are saying something that you wish to believe, one is wise to postpone celebration. I believe history has proved that one should examine carefully the position statements of President Obama and those he has elevated to positions of power. This is almost certainly true of the current craze to believe that the healthcare bill will be dramatically altered to make it more palatable to those who profess sanity.

Many in Congress have still not read the bill much less understand it. There are undoubtedly other important matters that deserve attention. The healthcare bill should be ditched until next year, at the earliest. Any person who votes for this monstrosity in whatever the final form is this year, deserves to never again be considered for public office.

LINDEN'S LIFE:
On Friday, attended the early morning Men’s Prayer Breakfast. Visited several business places and, as is true in the following days, worked some on the board game I’m interested in.
Saturday brought another prayer breakfast at Kingsway; Hal Blank spoke on a charity air ambulance service www.graceonwings.org it was interesting. It was also good to hear that Lindsay has returned to his old job. Later, at our Avon Writers Group meeting, we reviewed some of the writings submitted for our next book.
Sunday brought church services and Sunday school. I had slept so poorly that I didn’t go out for brunch. Did little the rest of the day.

On page two of the Thursday Indianapolis Star there was a twelve line blurb entitled “IT’S D-DAY FOR EXECUTIVE PAY.” It reported that President Obama’s compensation czar, Kenneth R. Feinberg, would be setting the compensation levels for the top 25 employees of each of seven companies. Sounds like Russia under Stalin!

It is widely thought that Boards of Directors of many companies have been remiss in adequately representing stockholders interest in the area of executive compensation. Is that an area that a single unelected person should have governance over? Should this nation be moving closer to Socialism? Is this gaggle of czars necessary, desirable, or legal? Should President Obama be impeached?

I was the prayer-reader at our Thursday breakfast meeting: Paul was absent. Chuck said that he went to the ER on Wednesday with a troublesome heartbeat irregularity—he blamed me not sharing my piece of coconut-pecan pie with him on Saturday for this problem. It is not a fair world. We had a great meal and excellent speakers at our Golden Glows luncheon. I’m still a little stiff and sore from my most recent fall but am better than yesterday.

THE ANGRY MOB:
The liberal media and those they support has made much of the apparent anger displayed by some of those who are attending the town hall meetings held by some of the democrat congressmen. This anger is real, is widespread, and is justified.

Finally, thanks to talk radio and Internet activity, the word is slowly getting out about the shortcomings of those currently in power in Washington. The bill writing process is bad beyond description, the waste of money should be criminal, the honesty of many of those involved is nonexistent, and any concern for the taxpaying public is hard to find.

Many of those in the leadership party, including our bad joke of a President, are spouting inaccuracies about a healthcare bill they have neither read nor understand. Its length is a testimony to the inefficiency of those who have drafted it.

Pray to GOD that the bill is relegated to the scrap heap of history and that those who support it are turned away from the public trough as soon as possible.

With Congress being on another of their long vacations, Linden just didn’t come up with anything that seemed to be worth writing about in that area. So, letting his mind wander, he started thinking about job losses in various industries. Since he considers the media to be largely in bed with the democrats and since it has suffered relatively large job losses, he wondered how happy many of them may now be for the support they so willingly blessed Obama and his democrat cohorts with. He failed to come up with an answer.

LINDEN'S LIFE:
Played nine holes of golf rather poorly. On the third hole, I tripped over a rope which keeps carts off the fairway and had a hard fall. First fall in a while. I did next to nothing after I returned home and am reasonably sure that I will be sore tomorrow. Otherwise, no complaints. I have been wanting to eat some chili for at least a month and made a pot of it a couple of days ago. I warmed up some for dinner—it is always better as a leftover than it is the first day. It turned out ok but is not nearly as good as that I made from the recipe Caroline gave me 25 or 30 years ago. Wish I could find that recipe.

Perhaps Linden is not as generous as he should be but he is just not much into helping others to buy cars. I suppose he likes the idea as well as he liked the bailouts, the stimulus package, the stealing of the auto companies from their rightful owners and the confirmation of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. Still, he is not wild about subsidizing car ownership for others. I guess one could say that he likes the idea at least as well as he does the idea of helping to buy a fleet of airplanes for those who represent us in Congress. How fortunate Linden feels that his ten year old car is not yet a clunker. Oh well, by all rights Linden should not hate the idea as much as his children, grandchildren and their descendents will hate what Congress, with the cooperation of the President, has done to them.

Just routine things for most of the day then Brian called for a very enjoyable visit. Following that, Julie and Jade came by. What a pleasant surprise. We had dinner and a good visit. She has been on the road quite a bit. Jade is walking pretty well now and is starting to say a few words. Following in the Swift family tradition, I think she is gonna be pretty bright. Make that pretty and bright.
