LAST JUNE WEEKEND

LINDEN'S LIFE
This posting will be unusual to the extent that Linden will not be posting anything of a political nature: Just a report of his recent activities.
Friday, as usual, started with the early morning Men’s Prayer Breakfast. Peter Ignatius was the speaker. He and his wife manage an outreach in India. They stayed in our Mission House for a few days a couple of years ago when the House was located in downtown Plainfield. He gave a good talk. Back home, I did the blog posting, hung the “Swift Temper” horse race memento that Julie got for me, talked to Brian a bit – he and Sheri are taking a short vacation while his kids are with their mother in California. Rob Hoos and Jon Kemery came by my place for a visit. Rob was an intern at Church last summer and we spent some time together. Jon is a house parent at Pinehaven Christian Children’s Ranch in Montana. I hadn’t met him before: seems really nice.
Saturday I slept in a little (not much), read the paper, fixed some instant oatmeal and had the last piece of the Pecan Kringle Danish that Katia had sent to me. I continued with what I started a day or so ago – arranging my messy, paper cluttered living quarters. It is looking better. I may be falling into the trap of watching too much television: I rarely even turn the set on and last night I watched two movies and another one tonight. I do not remember the last time I did anything like that.
Sunday brought Church, Sunday School and brunch with friends. Justin White delivered the sermon today and did an excellent job. The subject was “conquering death.” Within the sermon he mentioned that he had checked a web site concerned with estimated date of death. When I got home, I checked http://www.deathclock.com/ to see what it could tell me: it basically said that I should have died almost five years ago and “have a good day.” I feel like a winner! Went to the very nice wedding of Rob and Amanda (Thomas) Hoos in the late afternoon. It was held outside on the Church property and was really nice: Jon Kemery played the bagpipes. The wedding was followed by a nice reception in our fellowship hall. This has been a good weekend.

HOPE FOR THE FUTURE

When Linden posted his week long "Help Wanted" series regarding the need for the Republicans to field a candidate in each one of the congressional districts, he stated that he was not certain that all the information regarding candidates was up to date and accurate.
When Linden attempts to compile a list of those now "serving" who bring continuing discredit to those who support them, the following names come immediately to mind. Kennedy, Shumer, Murtha, Durbin, Ried and Pelosi. Other names should also jump out but they just don't at this time.
What happy news came in the mail yesterday in the form of a fund raising letter from the campaign of William T. Russell. williamrussellforcongress.com His literature leads one to believe that he is a highly desirable candidate and, oh happy day, he is opposing Murtha in Pennsylvania District 12. What a blessing this could bring!
Also in the area of good news, the signers of the Lynn Westmoreland R-GA petition "I will vote to increase U.S. oil production to lower gas prices for Americans" is now up to 191. If you would like to see the U.S. make use of its own natural resources and slow down the sending of so much money to the middle east, you may wish to actively oppose those non-signers. This outflow of dollars has everything to do with the loss of value for the dollar in the international market.

YESTERDAY REVISITED

Linden believes that his posting yesterday regarding Representative Lynn Westmoreland's (R-GA) effort to secure signatures on his "I will vote to increase U.S. oil production to lower gas prices for Americans" petition is important enough to warrant an additional posting. http://westmoreland.house.gov/
This one day time lapse swelled the number signing to 188 from 183 and now includes the staggering total of 3 Democrats (large D.) Most democrats have not responded at all but 6 have said they will not sign the petition. Sadly, 11 republicans (small r) have indicated they also will not sign the petition.
A quick scan of the 2006 voting rating of these 11 as provided in 2007 by Citizens Against Government Waste indicates that most of these 11 have moved from being rated as either friendly to lukewarm to taxpayers to now being considered by CAGW as being unfriendly to taxpayers. In other words, they are now more like democrats.
These 11 are Ros-Lehtinen of Florida, Johnson of Illinois, Bartlett of Maryland, Ramstad of Minnesota, Ferguson, Frelinghuysen, LoBiondo, Saxton and Smith of New Jersey, Inglis of South Carolina and Reichert of Washington.
When this season, which is devoted to attempting to enlighten regarding democrats, is over, perhaps we will start focusing on republicans who have lost their way.

LINDEN'S LIFE
Tuesday did not start off well at all: very shaky and dizzy - this lasted for a bit. Thinking that I needed to spoil myself, I ate two of the Danish Kringles pieces Katia had sent: One raspberry and one pecan. They were delicious! You might check them out at www.ohdanishbakery.com The rest of the day involved going to the credit union to take care of some business I had let slide, picking up mail at the post office and the delivery box and doing a bit of writing. Little real activity.

OOPS PLUS OTHER STUFF

OOPS
Linden intended to have a few additional words at the end of yesterday's fanciful financial disclosure posting: Due to a slight organizational problem, those words did not appear. They were (or are) as follows:
It should be noted that Linden, being unmarried, has no spouse that could serve on corporate boards. So, there is no possibility of bribery through that conduit having any effect on his calling as a political commentator.
It was referenced in conjunction with yesterday's posting trigger article that the wife of Senator Bayh serves on 7 corporate boards. Some of these positions are quite lucrative.
-----
OTHER STUFF
A review of the report by Representative Lynn Westmoreland R-GA at http://westmoreland.house.gov/ revealed that all of the Indiana Republican House members had endorsed his proposal "I will vote to increase U.S. oil production to lower gas prices for Americans." None of the Indiana House democrats had signed on. In fact, of the 183 signers to date, only 2 brave Democrats had signed on.
Would it be fair to say that if you support high gas prices you will vote for democrats? Conversely, would it be equally fair to say that if you oppose high gas prices you will vote Republican? Are you capable of rational thought?

LINDEN'S LIFE
Joined Bob, Carl, Don and Ron for coffee before playing 9 holes of golf with Dennis and Paul. Played a little better than last week (used Paul's old driver) but it is gonna be quite difficult to make the Senior Tour anytime soon. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE

This posting was triggered by the June 14 and 17 Maureen Groppe columns which appeared in The Indianapolis Star. Linden will attempt to present his disclosure with the same level of careful attention that the law allows our leaders in Washington, D.C.

Total income: From $20,000.00 to $100,000.00
Liabilities greater than $10,000.00: None
Travel paid for by outside groups: None
Gifts received: From $300.00 to $1,500.00
IRA value: From $50,000.00 to $250,000.00
Other stocks: From $25,000.00 to $100,000.00
Miscellaneous other assets: From $15,000.00 to $250,000.00

Linden now feels that you have a better picture of his finances.

LINDEN'S LIFE
Did two loads of wash, went by the post office and to the auto shop to get a light bulb replaced, contributed to the Plainfield area American Cancer Society Relay for Life event through two different leaders and talked to Brian a couple of times.
Also, went by the credit union to deposit my "economic stimulus" check. Linden has mentioned before that he believes that congress could have easily developed a much more effective approach. Oh well, with Harry Ried and Nancy Pelosi it is probably too much to expect anything well done. What Linden really did not understand was his receipt of a notice 5 days ago which effectively said "the check is in the mail." If this notice went to millions of people do others feel that there is a bit of waste involved?

NERVES

Linden must admit that this posting is based more on feelings (he hates this because it is the way democrats usually base their actions and opinions) than it is on solid research. Bear with him as he stumbles along.
He gets very nervous when considering the probable results of the recent Supreme Court decision about granting rights to enemy combatants. Are they (with four exceptions) absolutely nuts?? Is there a reason why there is no effort to remove Stevens, Souter, Ginsburg, Breyer and Kennedy from office?
Sharing Linden's disgust, and proving that there is more wrong in Michigan that just poor government, is his perception of the actions of Senator Levin and Congressman Conyers. It appears to Linden that their primary interest is that of making President Bush look bad and that they will go to any lengths to do just that. Do they not know that he will be replaced by election in five months? Are they unaware of larger problems that they could and should address? Are there no suitable replacement candidates for these two???
-----
BAD NEWS
After devoting the last 5 postings to discussion of the need for Republicans to ensure that they have a candidate in each of the congressional districts, Linden was disheartened to learn that they now need a candidate in the Indiana 7th district. NUTS!!!

LINDEN'S LIFE
Friday brought the early morning Men’s Prayer Breakfast: There, Bill mentioned the need of prayer for The Tavriski Christian Institute in The Ukraine. It seems that they are once again embroiled in a previously settled and unwarranted suit over property rights. Pray for staff, students and successful resolution of this problem.
This day brought a very enjoyable lunch with a friend and, since he had, once again, slept poorly the previous night, several naps while attempting to read.
Saturday was another early breakfast and a writers group meeting. Also, it brought a surprise email from Gary, one of Linden’s pilgrimage companions in Spain. He remembered that Linden had left a memento at the 75-kilometer marker as we approached Santiago and he and his party adopted that practice of recognizing their attained age.
Sunday brought Church and Sunday School services plus a really great evening concert at Church: There were probably 500 attendees. We sang hymns as did solo performers, there were three or four short skits and great performances by our 35 member Men’s Chorus and a 15 piece band. All this was followed by ice cream. Great day!

HELP WANTED 5: SD thru WY

When Linden started this blogging effort last October it was primarily because he was absolutely amazed and disappointed to learn that 39 of the congressional districts (almost 9%) had not fielded a Republican candidate in 2006. What a sorry effort by the affected national, state, district and local Republican leadership. They, through lack of effort, allowed potential Republican voters to be denied the opportunity. It does not matter if there are few of these voters in those districts – the other side needs to know that not every person they represent approves of the, often poor, effort they make.
Linden will use the five days this week to advise you of his present concerns in this regard. Naturally, he cannot be totally confident of the accuracy of the information and some states have not yet had their primary elections. But, regardless, this will give you an opportunity to attempt to ensure that adequate representation is provided. So, the listing will show what he believes to be those districts within each state that have no Republican candidate and will just show a question mark in those instances where the lineup is as yet uncertain. This should change from time to time and we should all hope that the Republicans are better represented than they were in 2006. It would be nice if all of our candidates were rock-ribbed conservatives but a less than perfect candidate is better than none at all.

Tuesday brought the unwelcome knowledge that Linden is capable of playing (?) really lousy golf. The first 3 holes resulted in a score of 23 which included a 9 on a par 3 hole and 2 lost balls. Received the welcome news that my Wisconsin friend, Katia, and her two children had passed their U.S. citizenship test! At a time when most of the news regarding immigration is about illegals, it is particularly nice to hear of those who are doing it the right way.
Posted the first in this series of calling attention to the need for Republican candidates and then, because of lack of skill and having a dial-up connection, spent a great deal of time trying to disseminate this message to some within the affected states. This will be a continuing message.
Jack and Helen invited Paul and me to there house for dinner last night. Paul's wife, Judy, is out of town. It was a great meal accompanied by sparkling conversation.

78 & SUPREME COURT JUSTICES

Linden recently read or heard a short blurb which stated that Americans now have a life expectancy of 78 years. As luck would have it, Linden is now 78. Perhaps the end is near. Although he has other plans, he finds the idea of hitting the wall more acceptable if he surmises that Justices (ha) Breyer, Ginsburg, Kennedy, Souder and Stevens would do their country the great favor of joining him on judgement day.
Their decision which effectively granted enemy combatants more legal rights than our own military is afforded is just another example of how badly we are served when liberal judges are appointed. Those responsible for scuttling the nomination of Bork some years ago owe the American people an apology for their shortsightedness.
This Guantanamo decision should call to attention in great detail the liklihood that at least one of our current presidential hopefuls would appoint one or more of the same type of muddled thinking specialists to fill any vacancy.

LINDEN'S LIFE 6-12-08

There are few of Linden's postings that do not lead off with comments of a political nature: This is one of those times. Monday was a day that included enough things of personal worth to Linden that other matters paled into insignificance.
He had the opportunity to see his daughter, Julie, and granddaughter, Jade, for a few moments before they started their return trip home.
He had lunch with his grandson, Jake, and followed that by returning home and listening to music for an hour or so: Ended up, surprisingly, being mostly opera.
This was followed by receiving word that Katia's husband, Kris, had taken his oath of citizenship - truly a wonderful happening.
About bedtime, a call came from Brian while he waited at the airport for Sheri and Alison.
It was an exceptionally good day for Linden.

THREE ITEMS

ITEM ONE
The "DILBERT" shown in the business pages of the June 10 Indianapolis Star depicts a business leader talking about it not being his fault that his company will write off billions of dollars worth of bad loans: It is the fault of those responsible for "regulatory oversight." In real life, he could take this cockeyed view to kick off a run for congress. There are plenty of the same type of excuse makers there.
ITEM TWO
In the same section of the same paper there was reference to union workers starting an organized protest of rising gasoline prices. With their blind loyalty to the democrats, perhaps these same workers deserve some of the blame for the long term absense of oil drilling and refinery construction in our counry. There would be jobs created and a reasonably quick gasoline price reduction if this effort was started now. Unions do have an interest in job creation, do they not?
ITEM THREE
Radio news reported that the Senate Republicans had blocked a democrat effort to impose windfall profits tax on selected oil companies. Contained within the bill were conditions that would make one wonder about the sanity of the author. THANK YOU GOP SENATORS (and one democrat.)

SLOW LEARNER

Having been out of the news loop for a while (it was kinda nice and may become a habit,) Linden must address some of his previous thoughts in order to complete this posting. At his age, it was easier when his memory was better.
Linden has strong religious beliefs and, as part of that, expects a great deal from those who are involved in the leadership of the church he chooses to attend. Fortunately, his church is blessed with great leadership and adheres closely to Bible based messages with very little attention given to what some would consider to be current social and/or political issues. If it did not follow this approach, he would find another church. After all, current event monitoring and preparing for life after death in this world are two distinctly different things.
In this vein, a news article or two from a couple of weeks ago has remained as an item of some little interest to Linden: The reporting that Barack Obama had decided, after 20 years to part ways with the Jeremiah Wright church. If a truly capable thinking person had been exposed to such a message of hate for only a short time, it would seem that they would have parted company with the messenger much more quickly. Perhaps Obama is a truly slow learner. This thought seems even more logical after listening to him speak without the benefit of a teleprompter: Truly and sadly pitiful!

Linden's Life
Most of the rest of Monday did not measure up to the sheer joy of sampling some more of the Pecan Kringle that Katia had blessed me with. Exceptions would be having lunch with Julie and holding five week old Jade for a few minutes. What gloom there was in the day was furnished by the knowledge that this was the anniversary of Rubye's death five years ago. Sometimes it seems like it was a long time ago and other times it seems much more recent. Wonderful woman!

RETURN OF THE PRODIGAL

OK, Linden does hardly qualify as "The Prodigal" and there was certainly no fatted calf celebration: But, he did return. It was a very pleasant time at Johnson Bible College and there will be more about that later. (At this point the connection was lost and so was a fair amount of this posting.)
The week ended on a, politically speaking, dismal note. Linden had so looked forward to viewing the democrat convention but, due to the Clinton withdrawal, there will be nothing entertaining about it. Linden can think of few potential candidates that he feels to be less suitable for leading this country than Clinton or Obama and it appears the least able of the two has been selected to be the democrat candidate. It is difficult to imagine that 35 million almost evenly divided voters would have selected either of those two.

LINDEN'S LIFE
May 30 through June 1: Attended the 6:00 A.M. Men's Prayer Breakfast and had a busy day filled with various household related tasks. Received in the mail from friend Katia two of the most delicious ever Danish Kringles - one was raspberry and the other pecan. The way to Linden's heart is definitely through his stomach and these Kringles are the key. Thank you! Saturday was a replay of Friday. Sunday was highlighted with Church, Sunday School, brunch with friends and routine tasks.

June 2 through June 6: Slept poorly but was on the bus headed for the college at 6:30. After stopping for brunch at Berea, Ky we arrived at the college about 4:00. We were assigned very confortable rooms, had a very nice welcoming banquet and great evening program. President Weedman and his wife, Janis, are former members of our church so it is always good to see them. There were 58 from our church in attendance to this "Senior Saints In The Smokies" gathering and probably another 300 from other congregations scattered around the various states.
The rest of the week was filled with good food and fellowship, many opportunities to take classes and very enjoyable evening programs. It was just fun and was too soon over and we were on the bus going back home. After stopping for lunch at Lexinton =, KY we arrived home in the early evening. This was Linden's fifth trip to this affair and he certainly hopes to attend again next year.

June 7 through June 8: Great weekend! Had breakfast Saturday with the group from Kingsway Church and later in the day had dinner with Brian. This is one of my favorite things to do - visit with my kids. He had brought Jake over to spend a few days in Plainfield - mostly with Brian's Mother. It had finally quit raining in Indiana earlier in the day: There was much flooding in many locations.
Sunday brought the usual Church attendance followed by brunch and later in the day
Julie brought new Granddaughter, Jade, by for a surprise visit - Jake came also- it was the first time Linden had seen the new one in person and it was nice to hold her. She is a good and a beautiful baby. The four of us went out for dinner and the visit was just great. This was a really, really good weekend and it followed a really good week.
