In Indianapolis, Republican Mayor Greg Ballard has been busy cleaning up the mess left by the previous democrat regime. For some reason, the Editorial Board of The Indianapolis Star announced that they were endorsing the candidacy of his opponent in the upcoming election. Has rationality completely departed from those who furnish us with “news”?

LINDEN’S LIFE

Friday: Men’s Prayer Breakfast at 6:00. The books I’ve been expecting came about 1:00. Dan and Diana came by for coffee and a visit. Then, I went to the post office and credit union.

Saturday: I went to the post office and grocery in the morning and later, watched and listened to some football and did paperwork type chores.

Sunday: I went to church and Sunday school then home. Except for a nap and watching some football, I was busy at nothing much around the house.

DESPAIR

Just a glance at the newspaper on Thursday was enough to throw Linden into a blue funk: news of President Obama continuing his re-election campaign by attempting to buy votes by trading taxpayer money for college loan debt reduction and that the Republican portion of the committee charged with the responsibility of attempting to whittle the budget wanted an insignificant reduction in spending over ten years while their democrat counterparts, of course, wanted to raise taxes was all it took. Aaaargh!

LINDEN’S LIFE

On Thursday, Bill, Chuck, Jack, and I were the attendees at our usual breakfast meeting at 8:00: always a good time. Later, I received a call from those attempting to deliver the books I’ve been expecting for a couple of days: they said they would try again on Friday. I went to the post office, a pharmacy, a store and came home to do a couple loads of wash. Also had a note sent by FAX to my VA doctor. It seemed like I hurried all day even though my list of involvements is not all that long. The song I linked to above was sung often at the party celebrating my discharge from the Air Force…although discharged, I played basketball with my team the next night and we lost for the first time in a very, very long time. Memories!

PROGRESS STYMIED

As is aptly illustrated in the first link below, the Republicans in the House are doing a good job of furnishing beneficial bills for the Senate to consider. The Senate is doing nothing and even if it should suddenly become productive, the President would probably veto anything worthwhile.

Meanwhile, the President is campaigning all over the nation, complaining about the Republicans not doing anything. What a disgrace to the office. Linden could just puke.

LINDEN’S LIFE

On Wednesday, about the only thing I did in the morning was go to the post office. I expected some books today: maybe tomorrow. Had appointment with a doctor in the afternoon…it had been so long since I was there that I was no longer in their computer. Had a great meal followed by a good program at church in the evening. It was rainy and cold as I went home. After church, Dan brought me a short wave radio…I’d been wanting one to listen to some foreign broadcasts and some Morse code. It may not be exactly what I wanted but should be fun to play with. I had a couple of nice messages from Brian today.

Jesus, in another region, called demons out of a possessed man and cast them into a large herd of pigs which rushed into the lake and drowned. The people there were afraid and asked Jesus to leave. The healed man sang the praises of Jesus.

Back across the lake a large crowd gathered around Jesus, one of the synagogue rulers appealed to Jesus to heal his dying daughter. As they were going to the home of the ruler, a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years touched the cloak of Jesus and was healed by her faith.

The daughter of the ruler died before they arrived at his home. Jesus returned her to life and told them not to mention the miracle.

LOCAL ELECTIONS: VOTE!

For the umpteenth election in a row, Linden took donuts to the workers at Voter Registration in Danville and was the first in the County to cast his vote.

The only contested position in Plainfield involves Renea Whicker, incumbent Republican Council member. Our Council has performed admirably over the years and Renea deserves your support…without it, you chance the least desirable result.

In neighboring Indianapolis, Republican Mayor Greg Ballard is involved in a contest where his opponent is, in Linden’s opinion, making many baseless charges. Greg Garrison reported on his radio show that 2200 voters had been bussed to the Clerk’s office on Sunday to cast their ballots…Linden believes that a very high percentage of these will oppose Ballard… he too, deserves your support.

As mentioned above, I left home about 7:00, picked up the donuts and was in Danville before 8:00. I enjoy visiting with Laura and the other election workers. On the way home, I stopped by the Plainfield Chamber of Commerce to see Kent McPhail for a minute, met his replacement, Brad, went by the post office and went home to waste most of the rest of the day. In the evening, Paul picked me up and we went to a Tea Party meeting. Julie and I had several E-mail conversations today.

NEWS FLASH?

Linden scoured the various news and opinion sources and did not become aware of where President Obama may be campaigning at the moment. It is possible that he is ensconced in the White House attempting to determine where to waste the next half billion dollars on a doomed to fail “green” project…solar panels and cars in Finland have already been addressed. It seems that the solar panel fiascos are failing in more than one location. Meanwhile, VP Biden has excelled at being a laughingstock.
So, it seems that the real news flash may be that determining the dates of the Nevada and New Hampshire Republican primary elections may now be a settled issue and we can reasonably soon get on with the task of selection of the Republican candidate. Hope so.

Friday: Went to Men’s prayer breakfast at 6:00 and met with an insurance salesman at 11:00. Talked to Brian. In the evening, watched a good movie on TV. Had a severe backache all day.

Saturday: In the morning I went by an Indianapolis auction site thinking that they may have a short wave radio…there was no parking close so I returned home. Dan Smith came by for a cup of coffee: I read him part of a funny E-mail Brian had sent me earlier in the day. Dan made an equally funny comment. Later, I listened to or watched some football.
Sunday: attended church and Sunday school and went to brunch with friends. Back home, read the paper, did some computer stuff, listened to music and watched some football. The backache is getting better.

THANK YOU, YOUNGSTERS

By “youngsters,” Linden means any wage earner under the age of 55 and the younger the age the more thankful he is for your financial sacrifices as you finance the social security benefits for those oldsters who are drawing the benefits. It seems that not a soul talks about reducing the benefit amount for those older than 54.

As social security is more and more often referred to as a Ponzi scheme (Linden first referred to it as such in writing about five years ago) and there is much doubt about the young ever realizing any benefit for their support of the program, it seems like not a very good time to celebrate the recently announced increase in benefits for current recipients. My poor children! My even poorer grandchildren.

OBAMA'S "JOBS" PLAN

Linden has never thought that the Obama “Jobs” Plan was anything other than a tax increase and that it is irritating indeed for “news” announcers and writers to refer to it as other than a tax plan.

Linden appreciates the thinking of Mark Steyn, who was the host of the Rush Limbaugh radio show on Wednesday. He questioned why it would take 15 years to build a wall between Mexico and the U.S.  when it took only 14 years to build the Great Wall of China. Additionally, he mentioned a couple of times that we, as a country, are 15 trillion dollars worse off than merely being broke. Good Show!

A large portion of Tuesday was consumed by going to the VA Hospital in Indianapolis…finding parking there is usually a chore. I expected to get a shingles shot but, since they were out of the serum, settled for a flu shot. In the evening, I helped grade some of the kids who will be playing basketball in the church early elementary school leagues.

PRIMARY SEASON APPROACHES

Several states wanted to be or traditionally have been early voting states. Because of this, New Hampshire, traditionally first, is having difficulty finding an acceptable January date and may hold their primary in early December. I hope that will not be necessary. Monday was the first day of Presidential candidate filing in New Hampshire and four candidates filed. None of the four have to this point been considered to be front runners. There were at least twenty one candidates in the 2008 New Hampshire primary.

TOO OLD TO CRY?

This is one of those rare instances when Linden departs from his usual four postings per week being devoted to matters of political interest and his once per week religious focus. However, there are links to two articles which should hold the interest of the political junkie.
I had heard some mention of “The Way,” a movie about the St. James Way pilgrimage in Spain, being part of the Heartland Film Festival in Indianapolis. Following the Men’s Prayer Breakfast at church Friday, Dan Smith told me not to leave until he showed me a newspaper article that he thought was concerned with the pilgrimage I had taken in Spain at age 75. It resulted in my book, “An Old Man On The St. James Way.”
I borrowed the article, took it home, started reading it and memories started flooding back: soon, tears started in my bad eye and they were followed by more from the good one. I have always hated being overly emotional. Reviewing my writing did not cause the tears to abate.
To make a long story short, I, following the death of Rubye in June of 2003, knew that I needed to control my continuing grief. I have to believe that God made me aware of the pilgrimage. Lisa, Rubye’s daughter, was a major help in preparing me for the effort and Brian and Julie were supportive. I will not now mention the exertion, prayers, or mishaps involved…I did leave a Rubye related memento at a huge old iron cross in the mountains and four more such items at different kilometer markers at I walked the last 100 kilometers to the cathedral in Santiago.
When I returned home, I was in a much better mental condition but physically, I was a wreck. The aforementioned movie sounds like a good one that accurately touches upon some aspects of the trail…I am not sure that I would be able to view it.

Friday brought the things mentioned in the subject portion, above. Later, Lloyd came by to pick up clothes he had brought to see if I could use any of them…I kept a few items. I went to the post office, gas station, and grocery in the afternoon.
Saturday: Lloyd picked me up and we went to a men’s meeting at Kingsway, we had a very good meeting. From there, we went on to a Republican meeting in the Avon park…we were late but still in time to hear a good presentation by Todd Rokita. Listened to I.U. football and watched a couple of horse races in the afternoon.
Sunday: I attended church and Sunday school then spent the rest of the day at home…watched the Colts lose another game.

MORE ON OCCUPY

Linden had not intended to so soon readdress the subject of the dirty, stinking mobs which are infecting some of our cities across the nation. But some mention in a source which must, because of memory failure, remain unidentified, was believed to be worthy of bringing to your attention.
If the report was correct, it seems that some unions and other stirrers of the pot are paying at least some of the occupiers several hundred dollars per week to participate in their disgusting behavior. Linden has to wonder if for tax purposes, any record of these financial transactions is being kept.

On Thursday I met with the other four guys for breakfast…I gave the prayer and did the reading. At 10:00, Paul picked me up and took me to the eye specialist office. Little of note after I arrived back home…my eyesight had not deteriorated noticeably…I napped at home until the dilated eyes returned to normal. Had a nice rain today.

NOT WHAT I INTENDED

As a commenter, Linden often has difficulty selecting his subject of the day. Today is no exception. He had originally had in mind a totally different subject…one he is interested in and, perhaps, you will be, as well. However, he came across an article by Lloyd Marcus that he (Linden) considered to be so good that he just had to share it with you.
For much of his adult life, Linden has been puzzled by why a large percentage of black and Jewish voters have such a strong affinity for the democrat party. It is true that he has discussed politics sparingly with the blacks that he associated with. Perhaps that would have been enlightening or even changed some of their thinking. Wednesday, I went to Chick-fil-A for my breakfast of biscuits and gravy and from there to the post office to pick up my mail. Later, went to the license branch to renew my plates…got very good service…and at home did a bit of physical labor and a bit of paperwork.  Received a very welcome but too short  phone call from Brian. In the evening, had a good dinner and attended a good program at church.
I was not in a position to listen to much popular music at the time the song link I provided today was popular and I just stumbled onto it…I was looking for “Papa Niccolini”…having forgotten that I had previously linked to it.

After breakfast, I dropped off my recyclables and went on to the post office. Got some good mail. Then, I called Hospice of the Twin Cities in Minnesota in the hope that I could speak to Sharon Alery…instead, I had lovely conversations with Kristen and Pam…it was just a joy for me. I wanted to speak to Sharon about her wonderful singing of a beautiful song I heard on a radio show Saturday night. Later, I dropped off some messages at church and visited a bit and went on to a store to load up on chocolate candy and then by my credit union. Julie responded to an E-mail I had sent: funny!

OCCUPY, EDUCATION, AND REPORTING

As is true of the two links below, much of the recent news reporting has been concerned with the “occupy” movement. Linden is part of the almost all inclusive group that has not a clue what is the reason behind the effort: the only list of demands he saw, perhaps a dozen strong, was asinine beyond description. Surely it was a joke. Surely with the large number of educators and those considered to be highly educated involved, there should be clearly stated objectives.
It is logical to believe that it is largely concerned with the lack of jobs which touches every level of our society. The one thing most noticeable to Linden has been the lack of reporting covering how this blight may be traced back to those who most strongly supported providing lending to those who were unable to repay. The names of democrats Senator Chris Dodd of CT and Representative Barney Frank of MA come to Linden’s mind.

Monday found me going to the bathroom around 5:00 a.m. and then going back to bed to toss and turn until the alarm went off at 6:45: the snooze alarm was engaged several times and it was almost 8:00 when feet hit the floor again. Perhaps as a result, I was a deadhead all day long…couldn’t sit down without wanting to nod off.
After breakfast, I drove to Avon to get an ink cartridge refilled, then by the church and post office. I had a sandwich at lunchtime then Paul called to see if I wanted to go somewhere…we went to Culver’s and I just had some very good ice cream. We had a good visit and I did nothing else of great moment the rest of the day.

519 years ago, give or take a few days, Christopher Columbus proved that the earth is round by discovering the Americas. Perhaps someone else would have done so at another time but, for now, we will give Chris the credit and heap thankful blessings upon his memory.
Some 230 years later, Reverend William Swift and his wife, Diana, is said to have sailed from Dublin to the Island of Bermuda where they had their first child before moving on to Virginia and having more children. Thanks Bill and Diana for your part in allowing Linden to be here today.
In spite of the great strides in the development of the various countries within the Americas, our own in particular, there has always been a segment of the population that is less than totally happy. We are seeing evidence of that in the current “occupy” movement. When this group is able to articulate their exact problems and recommend exact solutions to these problems, perhaps they will be considered to be more than a rag-tag mob of pampered complainers. Friday: I went to the Men’s Prayer Breakfast at 6:00 and shortly after went to and auto repair shop. Dan and Diana took me for a very pleasant lunch.
Saturday: I went to the writers group meeting at 10:00 then, watched or listened two football games.
Sunday: Went to church and Sunday school…had a very good recap of activities of TCI, the ministry outreach effort in Ukraine. Then, went on to brunch with friends. Later, watched another football game. I was 0-3 for the weekend.

NEWS ITEMS

The decision of Sarah Palin to not seek the Presidency was one of the major news items of the day. Not real welcome news to many, including Linden. One of the links below addresses Ms. Palin.

LINDEN’S LIFE
On Thursday I knew that Chuck, Jack and Paul would not be present at our morning breakfast but thought that Bill might be there and could possibly bring two out-of-country guests. I was wrong…I dined alone. They are in the process of sealing the blacktop surrounding the church so I parked nearer the road and walked back to my place several times. The power in the Mission House was off…Ray came over and got it going and we visited a while. I did two loads of wash and had calls from Brian, Joyce, and others.

RICK PERRY WAS CORRECT

In spite of the fake media concern regarding Rick Perry referring to Social Security as “a Ponzi scheme,” he was certainly not the first nor will he be the last to do so. In fact, in 2005, Linden penned an article entitled “The Ultimate Ponzi Scheme” and in 2008, made it a part of his book, “A Swift: Not Jonathan.” Of course, the subject was Social Security.
Those who criticize this line of thinking should produce a paper that refutes the claim. Good luck!

On Wednesday, I had biscuits and gravy for breakfast at Chick-fil-A. Then, went on to the post office, the credit union, a bank, and back home. In the evening, I had dinner followed by a program at church.

MARK 1:1-45

This Gospel starts with John the Baptist preparing the way for Jesus by drawing large crowds for baptism and telling them that one more powerful and worthy than he would come.

Jesus did arrive and was baptized by John and a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, whom I love, with you I am well pleased.” Jesus then went into the desert for forty days where he was tempted by Satan and attended to by angels.

John the Baptist was put in prison and Jesus went into Galilee where he called Simon, Andrew, James, and John to be his first disciples.

Jesus and the four went to Capernaum where Jesus taught, drove out evil spirits, and healed the sick, including the mother-in-law of Simon. He drew large crowds wherever he went.

On Tuesday, I dropped off my recyclables, went to the post office, and went to a nice store that I hadn’t visited before. They sell antiques, collectibles, and consignments. Back home, I reduced the large number of e-mails I had saved over the last three years. I printed out a goodly number before deleting them. I went to Indy Ink and Toner in Avon to get my black ink cartridge refilled. Back in the car, I placed the cartridge on top of a sack and a box of trash I intended to place in the dumpster next to Pier 14. Did that and when I pulled into my driveway, the ink cartridge was gone! Sure enough, it was in the dumpster…I had to get something to climb on to reach it and all ended well.

SUPPORT THE UNITED NATIONS?

If there is any truth to the belief of some that the United Nations is desirable and is a worthwhile investment, there are almost certainly some structural changes which need to be made.
First, if there are 192 nations participating, it would seem that the funding by each nation should be slightly over one half of one percent of the total cost. If it is true that the American taxpayer furnishes 22% of the total cost, we are being robbed.
If it is true that there exists over 18 million unpaid traffic tickets by UN “workers,” it would seem that the worst offenders should be deported.

SERVING THE TAXPAYER?

The two links immediately below provide examples of the failure of our employees to properly manage the funds they are entrusted with. The DOE learned nothing from the half-billion dollar failure that was recently reported and approved more guaranteed loans for those involved in the solar industry. They do this year end waste in order to provided the appearance of needing the current funding (or more) in order to continue their feckless operation. If they were truly serving the taxpayer they would abandon the “green” energy focus and start encouraging the drilling for oil. The DOE needs to be eliminated.

The second link is associated with the first and very well illustrates the result of the government and the media collaborating in an effort to sell the public on an effort to waste money. It is no wonder that the federal budget is out of balance!

LINDEN’S LIFE

Friday: Men’s Prayer Breakfast at 6:00. While there, Lloyd showed me an article that reminded me of my pilgrimage in Spain six years ago…it brought back memories. Bob made a copy of it for me. Dan dropped by for coffee later in the day.

Saturday: Jim and Lloyd picked me up at 7:00 and we went to a breakfast meeting at Chapel Rock Christian Church. Afterward, I returned the Ireland books I had borrowed from Lloyd, saw a great book Marsha had created about a trip to Ireland and brought some of Lloyds clothing back home to see if I can use some of it. Talked to Brian and Katia sent me links to a couple of interesting Bulgarian songs.

Sunday: I went to church and Sunday school and back home to snack all day while reading the paper, taking a nap, listening to Irish and German music on radio shows and my Tish Hinojosa CD. Later, watched a good movie and it was close to bedtime.
